What it is
RACI maps tasks against people, marking each as Responsible (does the work), Accountable (owns the outcome — only one), Consulted (gives input) or Informed (kept updated).
When to use it
- Starting a project or process with several people involved.
- When work is slipping or being duplicated.
- Handovers between teams.
How to use it
- 1List the tasks. Put each key task or deliverable in a row.
- 2List the people/roles. Put each person or role in a column.
- 3Assign R, A, C, I. For each task, mark who is Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed.
- 4Check the rules. Exactly one Accountable per task; avoid too many Responsible; not everyone needs to be Consulted.
What’s inside the template
- Tasks × roles grid
- R/A/C/I legend
- Validation prompts (one A per row)
Frequently asked questions
Can there be two people Accountable?
No — a core RACI rule is exactly one Accountable per task, so ownership is never ambiguous.
What is the difference between Responsible and Accountable?
Responsible does the work; Accountable owns the outcome and answers for it.
